Lighted Glass
Glass transparent to visible light but not infrared?

Why is it that visible light is transparent to the glass and not IR? I I know it is because visible light does not have enough [eV] to knock an electron to the conduction band, but they have even less infrared [eV] that light visible? So therefore you must also pass infrared glass but if not! It helps a lot thanks for the answers!

Their reasoning power only applies to semiconductors and metals in terms of absorbance. We're talking about, the glass here, so an insulator. You must return to the spread and interactions of waves in dielectric media, which is not easy to calculate for each material. We might well ask why red paint is red (why which absorb blue light?) Back to what we know. The glass is transparent to wavelengths between 0.2 and 3 microns or less. This means that near ultraviolet light to about infrared light. Other wavelengths are absorbed. What is absorption? It comes from the light is transmitted transparently the media. Actually, light is an electromagnetic wave. It spreads perfectly in a vacuum, but when it passes through matter, which interacts with its constituents (atoms, molecules …). They are seen as what appears to be on this scale, the atoms (and molecules at another level) are very small electric dipoles. An EM wave is usually swings dipole. Is absorbed. Depending on whether the oscillation corresponds to a natural "vibration" frequency of the atom or not, the wave can be completely absorbed or it may be re-issued with varying delay and attenuation or so. Everything depends on the constant oscillation of the dipoles little. That is, the forces that bind atoms and their electrons. You certainly know these properties vary greatly depending on the atoms and their environment. In glass, it appears that the rapid vibration frequencies (in the ultraviolet light) are somehow prohibited by atomic (or molecular) dipole system does not respond well to them. Same goes for the vibration frequencies too slow (light far IR). I hope this answers your question. You can find an example of how the response of an atomic (or molecular) to a dipole EM wave, and how may vary depending on the wavelength, on the following link: http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fichier:Dielectric_responses.png
