The art of stained glass has changed over time, from Greco-Roman civilization to the latest American. It can be traced back to Greco-Roman civilization. About the basis of the remains of Pompeii and Heraculaneum, stained glass was a luxury for rich Romans internal rather than an art form. When Greco-Roman civilization collapsed, the stained glass tradition survived and spread throughout Europe. Much of what we know today about the early production of stained glass comes from the book "atrium Diversarum Schedule ", written by the monk Theophilus. This book goes back to the late eleventh century. It gives a detailed description of the process of drawing up a window. Although new technologies have developed over the years to improve the art of stained glass, the same basic method is described that Theophilus is still used today.
The first period of stained glass production was about 1000 – 1500 AD This was during the Gothic period, and therefore the windows that were created during this time are of Gothic style. The construction of new churches is what started the production of glass during this time. The Gothic produced many of the great cathedrals of Europe, and the windows, as we know, began to be created to fill these new cathedrals. Medieval craftsman during the Gothic period were more interested in illustrating an idea of the creation of natural or realistic images. Many of the images were abstract. In addition, there was often frontal grave of the image represented. Artisan of the Gothic period could only make small glass panes, the size of a hand, so that the windows seemed a mosaic. Many of the windows are not painted at all during this time. If the window is painted, the only color available was gray, which was applied by the painter, and was set by a glazing process. Painters often use this gray to draw finer lines, ornaments, and the folds of drapery smaller in the window. Painting often crude and easily during the Gothic period. The production of a particular color was not an easy task for glass artisans. During this time, heat the oven was what determined the color of the glass, and since the oven temperature was difficult to regulate, it was difficult to produce any specific color. The principle colors used during the Gothic period are red, green, blue and yellow.
Near the end of the Gothic period, there were two discoveries that had the art of stained glass to a new level, namely, silver stain and abrasion of glass shining. With these new discoveries, stained glass artisan were now able to do several things that could not do before. Craftsman windows of this time is constantly coming with new combinations, and therefore, more windows complex. Level of difficulty also increases during this time, and the stained glass craftsman were able to produce large panels of glass, which also enhanced their ability art. More information about these specific findings and history of stained glass is available on the website of DC Riggott.
